Stream FAQ

CFRU-FM broadcasts a MP3 audio stream over the Internet for your listening pleasure. We recommend that you listen via Winamp, iTunes or VLC player.
Please click one of the two links found in the bar to the right. If you are having difficulty here are few tips and frequently asked questions.

Where can I download Winamp?

Winamp is available for download at http://www.winamp.com

Can I use something other than Winamp to listen to the streams?

Yes, you can listen to the stream using other programs including Real Player and Windows Media Player but you may have to enter the stream URL's instead of clicking the links off our web pages.

URL's @?! What are they ?

URL's or Uniform Resource Locators are web site addresses. For example http://www.cfru.ca/stream.php is the URL of the page you are currently looking at. Our stream had an URL addresses that you can type into your MP3 player if you are having trouble opening the streams from the links on our web site. The URL for our streams is :

Stream 1 (96 kbps) : http://131.104.85.70
Stream 2 (128 kbps) : http://live.cfru.ca/listen

For example in Winamp you can enter these addresses into the program by clicking on the playlist button (usually the little button labeled PL). Once the Winamp Playlist window is open click on add and then add url. In the open URL window enter one of the full addresses listed above including the http:// then click open. In the playlist window double click on the URL and the stream should begin.

When I click on the stream links off the web page a text file appears ?

This generally means that your browser doesn't recognize the file associations for the .pls Winamp playlist file. Look within your browser's help section for more information about setting file associations. You will want to have files with the extension .pls be opened by winamp. You will need to find where the winamp executable file is located on your computer and associate it with the file. Occasionally if you re-install Winamp this will solve the problem.

Conversely if you don't want to bother with setting the file associations or reinstalling Winamp you can just manually enter the stream addresses into your favourite MP3 player, following the instructions above.

The stream keeps stopping to buffer, what should I do?

If you are having constant buffering problems, your internet connection may not be quick enough to receive all of the audio data that our server is sending it. There are lots of reasons that may be occur, network traffic, if you are downloading files at the same time as listening etc. If you are listening via dial up modem you most likely will not be able to listen using the Hi Speed Stream.

I have tried all of these things and I still cannot connect ?

Computers are fickle creatures so occasionally our streams will go down, send an email to tech@cfru.ca if you think our stream is down or still need help connecting.
